Can You Beat the Marathon Wall?
EscuchadoJeff just ran Berlin and Chicago two weeks apart and says he never hit the wall. Allie isn’t buying it. They break down what the wall actually is, from running out of fuel to starting too fast to heat, plus a Berlin study finding men were twice as likely as women to hit it. Hear their fueling tricks, pacing advice, and why “bank equals bonk.”
The Post Marathon Trap
EscuchadoYou just crossed the finish line. Now what? We break down the “one day of recovery per mile” rule, the four-week “reverse taper” that rebuilds your volume from 30% to 60% to normal, and why jumping back too soon is how injuries sneak in. We also share their own post-race rituals, from hot-cold-hot baths to compression boots to a Galloway-style walk/run, plus a cautionary tale about running two marathons in two weeks.
How to Know When to Stop Running
EscuchadoPhysical therapist Dr. Winnie Yu joins Allie breaks down the real green-light, yellow-light, red-light system for running injuries — from runner's knee to stress fractures, and makes the case for strength training as the single best injury-prevention tool. Bonus: practical advice on shoe rotation and knowing when it's time to actually stop and see a professional.
You're Running Too Fast
EscuchadoWhy do long runs feel so hard? One runner shares three surprising (and slightly controversial) tricks that transformed her long-runs and her relationship with endurance training.
No More Gels, Try This!
EscuchadoA sports dietitian breaks down everything runners need to know about fueling — from strategic carb-loading (not just pasta night) to race-day gel timing, hitting 75g of carbs per hour, and fast post-race recovery. She also tackles the topic every runner secretly wants covered: preventing GI distress by training your gut like a muscle. Put this into practice: How to Fuel Your Runs: Nutrition Tips for Training and Racing
When Training Goes Wrong
EscuchadoA ultramarathoner, certified run and nutrition coach, and lupus survivor, Mireille Siné, joins the show to talk training through chronic illness, rebuilding from ground zero after autoimmune flare-ups, and why she treats sleep (7+ hours, consistent bedtime) as non-negotiable. She also breaks down realistic marathon timelines for beginners, easy meal prep for runners, spotting the difference between training fatigue and a flare-up, and the value of real-life running community over social media's highlight reel. Tips: How to Fuel Your Runs: Nutrition Tips for Training and Racing
My First Marathon at 60
EscuchadoHe's 60 and training for his first marathon. In this episode, we chat with runnine newbie, Paul Smith, about prepping for the NYC marathon, fueling with Pop-Tarts, learning to pace himself, and why he got cleared by his cardiologist first.
When Does Running Get Easier?
EscuchadoDoes running ever actually get easy? Allie and Jeff break down the science of how long it takes your body to adapt — from feeling adaptations in as little as two weeks to tendons needing 8-10 weeks (or longer) to catch up. They also get personal, talking injury comebacks, why patience matters most for older runners, and the eternal mystery of the "runner's high" neither of them has ever felt.
The Fittest Cities in the U.S.
EscuchadoOne Mid-Atlantic town took the crown (again) as America's fittest city. Allie and Jeff dig into what actually makes a city "fit" — sleep habits, park spending, bike commuting, food access — and share real tips for running in a city, from facing traffic to finding scenic, stoplight-free routes along the water.
Lessons from Josh Kerr’s Record-Breaking Mile
EscuchadoInspired by Josh Kerr’s record-breaking mile, this episode explores what everyday runners can learn from an elite performance. From using tune-up races to build confidence to testing race-day gear, mastering consistent pacing, and leaning on pace groups, discover practical strategies you can use to race smarter—and faster—at any distance.
Yes, You Can Run A Marathon
EscuchadoNever run before but marathon-curious? Runner's World hosts Allie and Jeff break down their new 24-week walk-to-run marathon training plan — built for total beginners who want to go from walking to crossing a marathon finish line. They cover when you start running without walk breaks (week 11!), how to handle missed workouts, injury comebacks, and why a longer build makes the whole thing way more doable than you'd think.

Boston Bonus Episode
EscuchadoRunner’s World goes to Boston every year for the marathon. We always hear so many great stories while we're there. In this special Marathon Monday bonus episode, our hope is that we can share a few of those stories with you.
Episode 16: Running Clean
EscuchadoWhen Keith Giroux decided to run the Boston Marathon he had a number of logistical hurdles to overcome. For starters, he hadn't run a qualifying race. In fact he'd never run any formal race ever. Then there was the issue of gear. He didn't own a pair of running shoes or running shorts. And he only had ten days to solve all these problems. Also he was in jail. This episode of Human Race is sponsored by Aaptiv, an on-demand audio fitness app that you can do at home, at the gym, outdoors - anywhere. Episode 13: Bravo
EscuchadoA few years ago, Don Bravo was “one WrestleMania buffet” away from weighing 400 pounds. After his doctor warned that his weight would shorten his lifespan, Don started climbing stairs in his neighborhood...which led to the Harvard Stadium steps. And then the BAA 5k. His story of triumph is unexpected and funny. It might just make you stand up and cheer. It’s our election special—an uplifting story in what has certainly been a stressful time. Episode 12: Villains and Vigilantes
EscuchadoIn April 2015, a viral post on Facebook about the Boston Marathon kicked off a wave of controversy. In this week’s episode, we explore how that controversy turned into a full-blown movement. Today, a league of at-home vigilante race investigators are changing the way we police marathons online for everyone to see. The story takes us from a race in Pennsylvania to the Boston Marathon to a set of spreadsheets (yes, really) to a runner in a suburb in New Jersey. For those outed online, we wonder if the punishment fits the crime. Episode 5: Unknown Legend
EscuchadoFor over 20 years, the so-called World’s Longest Urinal was a New York City Marathon institution. At the height of its glory, it was an astonishing 350-feet long. The story of this urinal is one of DIY problem solving, triumph, and liquid tragedy. And behind this open air trough: An unknown legend named Vic Navarra. Vic was a fixture at the New York City Marathon for over a quarter of a century. He was a New York City firefighter who conducted the race start from the top of a fire truck's 85-foot ladder. When tens of thousands of runners poured onto multiple levels of the Verrazano bridge at the start of the marathon, Vic was the one conducting them. As the race start coordinator, he was the steward of this storied urinal, too. Together, their history gives us a glimpse into how the New York City Marathon scaled up to be the world class race that it is today. Episode 4: Trapped
EscuchadoA series of unfortunate (and hilarious) events just minutes before the start of one of the world’s most prestigious races. This week’s episode is a sprint—a short story. And you might want to hold your nose because it’s a pretty surprising, very unsettling story about a port-o-potty from Boston Marathon race director Dave McGillivray. Or, to up the stakes, a story about that time McGillivray nearly missed the start of the race he directs. Episode Credits: Host: Rachel Swaby Producers: Rachel Swaby, Audrey Quinn, Christine Fennessy Theme music: Danny Cocke Human Race editor-in-chief: David Willey
Episode 3: Sylvia
EscuchadoSylvia Weiner is a prolific runner. She’s 85 years old, and she estimates that over the course of her running career she’s completed somewhere near 2,000 races—and she’s got an extensive collection of race medals and trophies to prove it. In 1975, Sylvia even claimed a very special spot in Boston Marathon history. But her most significant legacy has nothing to do with race accolades. When Sylvia runs, she shows others what’s possible. Her long-term dedication to the sport is impressive. “I stick to running for dear life,” she says. That’s because running is more than a passion; it’s a way of dealing with her traumatic past. On this week’s episode, Sylvia shares her incredible story. Let’s just say, there’s a reason Sylvia’s longtime running buddy greets her with an enthusiastic, “Sylvia! She’s our hero!” Episode Credits: Host: Rachel Swaby Producers: Rachel Swaby, Audrey Quinn, Christine Fennessy Editing help: Brian Dalek Special thanks: Gordon Asmundson from the University of Regina for sharing his research…
