Horror Stories

00:05 Hello everyone and welcome back to Horror Stories. 00:08 I know many of you use these episodes to fall asleep, so before you drift off, I'd love it if you could leave a comment letting me know where you're listening from around the world. 00:17 Also, don't forget to like and subscribe if you're enjoying the episodes. 00:26 Story 1 June 2018 was the month everything changed for me. The month my trust in the badge and the uniform was challenged in ways the Academy could never prepare us for. I was 26 years old and already four years into my career with the Highway Patrol. 00:43 After working the graveyard shift along State Route 47, I thought I had witnessed enough late-night crashes in DUIs to last me a lifetime. 00:52 Most shifts were made up of speeding citations, the occasional intoxicated driver, and perhaps helping a stranded motorist replace a flat tire along that vast, empty stretch between Millbrook and Canton. 01:06 My sergeant used to joke that the greatest danger we faced was trying to stay awake during those endless nighttime hours when the radio remained silent and the highway extended for miles without another vehicle in sight. 01:18 But that particular Thursday night in June taught me that silence is sometimes when you need to be most vigilant, when predators rely on your routine and isolation to set their trap. 01:29 The dispatch call came through at 2.47am, slicing through the dead silence inside my patrol car like a blade. 01:37 Single vehicle collision. Possible rollover. 01:41 The caller had reported that someone was trapped and bleeding severely on Old Quarry Road, approximately eight miles beyond the county line. 01:49 I knew that section of road well. It was a narrow two-lane route that twisted through a dense pine forest. There were no street lights, no houses, and nothing nearby except an abandoned limestone quarry that had closed sometime in the 1990s. 02:04 Nancy, the dispatcher, sounded frustrated as she passed along the information. 02:08 She said the call had disconnected after roughly 20 seconds and she had been unable to reach the caller again. 02:15 Cell reception in that area was unreliable under the best conditions. 02:19 Dead zones existed everywhere between the surrounding hills. 02:23 Protocol required us to wait for backup before responding to isolated locations. But when someone might be bleeding to death, every second is important. 02:33 I activated my emergency lights and pushed the Crown Victoria hard through the winding curves, telling Nancy that I would assess the scene first while she attempted to send an ambulance from the county hospital. 02:45 Old Quarry Road emerged in my headlights like a passage carved through solid darkness. The pine trees formed walls on either side, appearing to absorb nearly every trace of light. 02:56 I swept my spotlight from left to right, searching for a vehicle that might have gone off the roadway or debris that could show where an accident had occurred. 03:05 About three miles down the road I found it. 03:08 Fresh tire tracks cut sharply to the right, crossing the soft shoulder and disappearing into the tree line. 03:14 My spotlight reflected off something metallic approximately 30 feet down the embankment. 03:19 It was a silver sedan wrapped around an enormous oak tree. 03:23 The entire driver's side had been crushed. Steam continued to rise from beneath the mangled hood, and dark stains covered parts of the shattered windshield. The sight made my stomach tighten. 03:35 I retrieved my flashlight and medical kit, radioed my position to Nancy, and half slid down the muddy incline. 03:43 My boot struggled to find traction among the wet leaves. 03:46 When I reached the vehicle, I identified it as a 2012 Toyota Camry from what remained of the twisted badge on the trunk. 03:53 The smell struck me before anything else. 03:56 A mixture of copper and gasoline blending with pine sap and damp soil. 04:01 Blood covered the driver's seat. It had pooled across the floor and splattered over the dashboard in a pattern that seemed strangely wrong. 04:09 It looked too deliberate, almost as if someone had thrown the blood rather than actually bled there. But there was no body. There was no injured victim trapped behind the steering wheel and no one who appeared to have been thrown through the windshield. I walked around the car with my flashlight, examined the back seat, searched the surrounding vegetation, and repeatedly called out in case an injured person had crawled away. 04:33 That was when I noticed the phone. An old iPhone had been carefully propped upright on the passenger seat. Its screen glowed, showing what appeared to be an active call. 04:43 A desperate woman's voice played through the speaker. 04:46 Please help me. 04:48 Oh God, please. 04:50 He's coming back. 04:52 I can hear him. 04:53 Please, somebody help me. 04:56 The same terrified plea repeated every few seconds. 04:59 A cold certainty settled over me as I realized that this was neither a voicemail nor an accidental pocket dial. Someone had recorded that woman's voice and deliberately left it playing. 05:10 I reached for my radio while instinctively resting my other hand on my service weapon. 05:15 Nancy, we have a situation here. Something isn't right. Possible false report. Requesting immediate backup at my location. 05:25 Static crackled through the radio. Then Nancy's voice answered, broken and distorted. 05:30 Unit 47, repeat that. You're breaking up. Did you locate the victim? 05:36 I tried repositioning the radio and moved away from the wreck in an attempt to improve the signal. 05:41 But the interference only became worse. 05:44 The GPS unit mounted on my patrol car's dashboard began to flicker. 05:49 My location jumped erratically across the screen before the unit went completely black. 05:54 My training told me to return to the cruiser, establish reliable communication, and wait for backup. 06:01 Then I saw headlights rise over the ridge approximately half a mile behind the spot where I had parked. 06:07 They were not the emergency lights of an ambulance or another patrol unit. They were ordinary headlights, traveling slowly and deliberately along the road toward me. 06:17 The vehicle stopped around 200 yards away from my cruiser and remained motionless in the darkness with its engine running. 06:24 I could hear the low idle of a diesel engine, something heavy, perhaps a truck or a large SUV. 06:31 My radio crackled again, and Nancy's voice suddenly came through more clearly. 06:37 All units, all units. We have received a second 911 call reporting shots fired on Old Quarry Road. The caller states that an officer is down. All available units respond code 3. 06:49 My blood turned cold. I had not heard anything I recognized as a gunshot. I had never reported being fired upon. and I was the only officer assigned to that road. 07:00 Someone was making fraudulent emergency calls, either to overwhelm the scene with responders or to confuse dispatch about what was actually taking place. 07:10 I pressed the transmission button. 07:13 Nancy, this is Unit 47. I'm Code 4. No shots have been fired. This is a setup. Warn responding units to approach with extreme caution. 07:24 When I released the button, all I heard was the same blanket of static, almost as if someone were intentionally jamming the frequency. 07:32 Movement at the edge of my vision made me turn sharply toward the tree line on the opposite side of the road from the wrecked Camry. 07:39 Three figures stepped out of the forest. They advanced steadily and with purpose, spaced apart in what we had been taught at the Academy to recognize as a tactical formation. 07:50 All three wore dark clothing. Baseball caps and bandanas concealed their faces, and I could make out the silhouettes of long guns in their hands. 07:59 My training took over immediately. Multiple armed attackers, superior weapons, compromised communications, an isolated position. This was not random. These people had studied our response procedures. 08:14 They knew that a report involving a trapped and bleeding victim would probably bring a single officer to the scene first. 08:21 They knew exactly where the radio dead zones were. They also knew how long it would take backup to reach that location. Even after receiving a report of an officer being shot, I took cover behind the engine block of my patrol car and drew my Glock 22. 08:36 I knew that 15 rounds would mean very little against three rifles, but I had no other choice. 08:43 A fourth figure had appeared beside the vehicle that had stopped farther up the road. He was speaking into what looked like either a handheld radio or a phone. 08:52 The three advancing gunmen halted approximately 50 yards away and positioned themselves behind separate trees. 08:59 One of them laughed. 09:01 The sound traveled clearly through the motionless night air. 09:04 They did not rush toward me or shout instructions. They simply waited. 09:09 Their patience frightened me more than open aggression would have. 09:13 These were not desperate criminals or meth addicts acting impulsively. 09:17 Everything about them appeared calculated, practiced, and professional. 09:21 The recording inside the wrecked Camry continued playing. That woman's voice kept begging someone to help her. 09:28 I finally understood that the recording had been designed to hold me at the scene, to make me hesitate before abandoning what sounded like a genuine victim. 09:37 Every element had been prepared in advance. 09:40 The blood made the collision look authentic. 09:43 The phone reinforced the emergency. The GPS jammer prevented anyone from tracking my position, and the false 911 calls confused the official response. 09:54 They had transformed our own procedures into weapons against us. The logical move was to get inside my cruiser and ram through whatever obstacle they had prepared, but I knew they would have anticipated that response as well. 10:07 When I glanced toward the vehicle, I saw liquid spreading beneath it, forming a dark reflective pool in the moonlight. 10:14 They had punctured the fuel tank while I was examining the wreck, probably with a rifle fitted with a suppressor and loaded with subsonic ammunition. 10:23 I must have mistaken the brief muffled pop for the rattle of the diesel engine and the static from my radio. 10:29 The Crown Victoria might travel another mile, perhaps two, before the engine died. 10:35 After that, I would be on foot with armed pursuers who understood the terrain. 10:40 My ballistic vest might stop handgun ammunition, but it would not protect me from rifle rounds. 10:46 They held every advantage. Greater numbers, stronger firepower, advanced preparation, and superior positioning. 10:54 I needed to gain time. I needed the responding officers to receive those fabricated reports and come racing toward the area. 11:02 Most importantly, I needed to survive the next several minutes until help reached me. 11:07 The fourth figure beside the truck lifted something to his shoulder. 11:11 Even in the darkness I recognized the unmistakable outline of a scoped rifle. Instead of giving them the shot they expected, I made the decision that probably saved my life. 11:22 I broke from cover, grabbed the foam from inside the wrecked Camry, and threw it as far as I could into the woods on the side opposite the gunman. 11:30 Then I immediately sprinted toward the steep embankment leading down to the old quarry access road. 11:36 The recorded woman's voice traveled through the air, still pleading for help. 11:41 Shouts erupted behind me as the attackers became confused and attempted to track both the sound of the phone and my movement through the darkness. 11:48 Branches ripped at my uniform as I half fell and half controlled my descent down the 40-foot slope. 11:54 I grabbed trees to slow myself while my duty belt caught repeatedly on roots and rocks. 12:00 A rifle fired somewhere above me. Bark exploded from a pine tree only inches from my head. 12:06 Another bullet struck a boulder to my left and threw off sparks. 12:10 They were aiming at noises and motion rather than at a visible target. That meant their night vision equipment was not perfect. 12:18 I reached the bottom of the slope and found the abandoned gravel service road connected to the quarry. 12:23 After orienting myself, I began running as hard as I could toward the main highway, which was approximately three miles away. 12:31 My boots pounded against the loose gravel. Behind me I heard people forcing their way through the undergrowth. Their pursuit sounded coordinated. 12:40 One team appeared to be following my exact route while another was probably circling around to intercept me near the highway. 12:47 My radio suddenly came alive with a clear signal. Nancy's voice sounded urgent. 12:53 Unit 47. What is your status? We have multiple units five minutes away. 12:59 I press the microphone while continuing to run, my breath coming in sharp gasps. 13:04 Code 3. Officer needs assistance. Forearm suspects carrying rifles. Ambush situation. I'm approaching Highway 12 on foot from the quarry road. 13:14 The next two miles were the longest of my life. I ran in full equipment, with my vest and duty belt dragging down every step, constantly listening for engines or footsteps behind me. 13:27 I eventually heard vehicles approaching in the distance, but I could not tell whether they belonged to the suspects or to responding officers. 13:35 When I finally broke through the tree line onto Highway 12, five patrol cars were racing toward me, their flashing lights painting the forest in red and blue. 13:44 I waved them down, pointed toward the quarry road, and collapsed against the first cruiser that stopped. 13:50 My legs shook uncontrollably from adrenaline and exhaustion. The investigation afterward revealed just how sophisticated the entire operation had been. 14:00 The wrecked Camry had been stolen three states away. 14:03 The blood inside it was pig's blood obtained from a slaughterhouse. The phone had been programmed to place a 911 call through a spoofed cellular tower that the attackers had installed inside a van. 14:15 Investigators discovered that the same group had targeted two other officers in neighboring states using similar methods. 14:22 One of those officers in Missouri had not been as fortunate as I was. 14:27 He was shot through the shoulder before backup reached him. 14:31 Authorities eventually tracked the crew through the burner phones they had used. The trail led to a militia organization that specifically targeted law enforcement officers. 14:40 Its members had studied police procedures using leaked training documents and recordings of emergency responses obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests. 14:50 All four suspects were arrested two weeks later during a raid on a compound in Arkansas. 14:55 Inside the property, investigators discovered maps of rural patrol routes, lists of radio frequencies, and extensive notes documenting response times in dozens of jurisdictions. 15:08 I still work for the highway patrol, but I now work the day shift in a more heavily populated district. I also refuse to answer remote calls alone, regardless of how urgent the reported emergency sounds. 15:21 Sometimes that recorded woman's voice still enters my dreams, begging for help that was never needed. 15:27 A ghost manufactured for the sole purpose of drawing me into their crosshairs. 15:37 Story 2 Seven months have passed since that night, and I still stay away from Interstate 40 whenever I can. 15:45 People often ask why I stopped driving trucks after spending 15 years on the road. They want to know why I sold my rig and accepted a desk job that pays only half of what I used to earn. 15:57 I tell them that I became exhausted by the lifestyle, or that my back could no longer endure those long hauls. 16:03 But the truth remains lodged heavily inside my chest, like a stone my body cannot digest. 16:10 I need to tell people what I witnessed, what I reported, and what authorities uncovered because of my phone call. 16:16 Perhaps sharing it will allow me to sleep without seeing those faces pressed against the glass, or hearing the sounds that should never have existed at a rest area 40 miles from nowhere. 16:27 By then I had been driving the route between Nashville and Memphis for approximately three years. 16:32 I usually completed two or three trips each week, transporting auto parts for a distribution center. 16:39 That particular Monday in early October began like every other run. I loaded the truck around noon and planned to continue straight to Memphis before taking my legally required rest period. 16:49 However, my thermos ran out of coffee somewhere beyond mile marker 85, and my eyelids began to grow heavy. 16:56 I decided to stop at the old rest area near the county line. Most truckers avoided the place because the facilities were deteriorating and the parking lot lights barely functioned. 17:07 Still it was quiet and I needed only a few hours of sleep before continuing the trip. 17:12 There were perhaps four other trucks scattered across the parking lot when I arrived, which was not unusual for that time of night. 17:20 I parked near the outer edge, where the trees provided shade during daylight hours, shut down the engine, and climbed into the sleeper compartment. 17:28 I had barely gotten comfortable when I heard what sounded like someone shouting. 17:33 The noise was distant and muffled as though it had come from behind the main building. 17:37 At first I assumed that two drivers were arguing over something ridiculous. Perhaps one of them had blocked the other truck from leaving. 17:45 I ignored the disturbance and tried to relax again. 17:49 Then I heard it a second time. The sound was higher pitched now, almost like a woman screaming. 17:55 My entire body stiffened because there should not have been any women at that isolated rest area at two in the morning. 18:02 I sat upright and looked through the windshield toward the main building. It was a long concrete structure containing the restrooms and several old vending machines that had not worked in years. 18:12 Behind it, almost concealed by the darkness. I could distinguish what appeared to be a newer addition, a metal building with two floodlights directed at a door labeled authorized personnel only. 18:24 While I watched, the door opened. Two men emerged. One of them seemed to be wearing a uniform, possibly belonging to a private security company. Together, they were half carrying and half dragging another person between them. 18:38 The person's head hung downward and their feet barely touched the ground. 18:42 Even from where I was sitting I could tell that something was seriously wrong with the way that person moved. It was as if they were completely unable to support their own weight. 18:52 The two men placed the person inside the rear of a white van that I had not noticed earlier. 18:57 It was parked tightly against the metal building. 19:01 One man slammed the back door while the other walked toward the driver's side. As he passed beneath the light, I saw the logo printed on his shirt. 19:09 Roadside protection services with some type of badge-shaped emblem underneath. 19:14 The van drove away, but instead of heading toward the interstate, it turned onto a service road leading farther into the woods behind the rest area. 19:23 I picked up my phone and prepared to call 911, but then I hesitated. 19:28 What exactly could I report? 19:30 I had seen two security guards place someone inside a van. The police would probably tell me to mind my own business. Maybe the person had become ill or suffered an injury, and the guards were taking them somewhere to receive help. But I could not dismiss what I had heard. Those screams did not sound as if they had come from someone who was simply injured. 19:51 They sounded like the screams of someone who was terrified. 19:55 I decided that I would take a short walk to stretch my legs, or at least that was what I told myself. 20:01 I could wander toward the metal structure and determine whether anything else seemed unusual. 20:06 I grabbed my flashlight, one of those heavy metal models that can serve as a weapon when necessary, and climbed out of the cab. 20:13 The October air struck me like ice water. It felt much colder than it should have at that point in the year. 20:20 I also detected a chemical odor in the air, something resembling bleach mixed with another smell I could not identify. 20:27 Every other truck in the parking lot was dark. Their drivers were probably asleep. 20:33 I felt entirely alone as I began walking toward the main building. 20:37 I moved around the side of the restroom structure, remaining in the shadows whenever possible. 20:42 My heart was pounding so loudly that I felt certain anyone nearby would hear it. 20:47 The closer I came to the metal addition, the more powerful the chemical odor became. 20:52 Now I could hear other noises as well. There was a constant low hum, like industrial ventilation fans, with voices beneath it. 21:01 Several voices. 21:03 Some people were speaking, others were crying. 21:06 A few produced nothing but low, agonized moans that made my stomach churn. 21:11 A window on the side of the structure had been covered with reflective film. 21:15 However, one corner of the film had started to peel away. 21:19 I approached cautiously, left my flashlight switched off, and pressed one eye against the narrow exposed section. 21:27 What I witnessed inside that room will remain with me until I die. 21:31 There were approximately eight or nine mattresses spread across the floor, with a person curled up on each one. 21:38 Most of them were women, young women. 21:41 At least two appeared to be no older than sixteen. 21:44 Their wrists had been secured with zip ties to metal rings bolted into the walls. They had enough freedom to lie on the mattresses, but not enough to reach the door. 21:54 Some still wore ordinary clothing, although everything was ripped and filthy. 21:59 Others had been dressed in cheap-looking robes that barely covered their bodies. 22:03 One girl lying near the window was awake. She stared at nothing, her eyes completely vacant, as if she had abandoned all hope that anyone would ever find her. 22:13 A man wearing the same Roadside Protection Services uniform sat in a chair beside the door. He casually scrolled through his phone as if he were working an ordinary security shift, as if the people restrained to the walls around him were not human beings. 22:28 I backed away from the window. My legs trembled so violently that I nearly fell. 22:34 I needed to reach my truck. 22:36 I had to contact 911, the FBI, or anyone else willing to listen. 22:41 As I turned to leave, a hand seized my shoulder and spun me around. Another security guard stood behind me. He was larger than the others, with a scar extending from his ear to the corner of his mouth. 22:54 He studied me silently for several seconds. Then he gave me a cold smile. 22:59 You lost, driver. 23:01 I muttered something about trying to find the restroom, but he did not believe me. 23:06 His hand shifted toward his belt, where I could clearly see a holstered gun. 23:10 The bathrooms are in the main building, he said. This section is restricted. Company property. 23:17 I nodded and began walking away. 23:19 That was when I saw it. 23:21 A state patrol vehicle was parked behind the building, partially concealed by a dumpster. 23:27 Its engine was running, but its lights were turned off. 23:30 The guard must have noticed me looking at it because his entire attitude changed. 23:35 He moved closer until I could smell cigarettes and something sour on his breath. 23:40 You didn't see anything tonight, understand? 23:43 You're going to walk back to your truck, drive away, and forget this rest stop exists. 23:49 Otherwise, well, truckers disappear all the time. 23:52 Highways are dangerous, especially for drivers who put their noses where they don't belong. 23:58 He patted the firearm on his hip to make certain I understood the warning. 24:02 I nodded once more, turned around and forced myself to walk instead of running back to the truck. 24:08 Every part of my body was urging me to sprint, but I knew he was watching. There were probably others watching me as well. 24:16 When I finally reached the cab, I locked every door, started the engine, and drove out of the rest area as calmly as I could. even though every instinct demanded that I slam down the accelerator. 24:27 I traveled approximately five miles before stopping at a gas station that was bright, crowded, and filled with ordinary people going about ordinary activities. 24:37 My hand shook so badly that it took me three attempts to dial 911. 24:42 The dispatcher initially sounded bored, probably because she was accustomed to receiving calls concerning minor collisions and speeding complaints. 24:50 As soon as I began explaining what I had witnessed, however, her voice changed completely. She kept me on the phone and transferred me to another person, who then transferred me to someone else. 25:01 Within 10 minutes, I was speaking with an FBI agent. He instructed me to remain exactly where I was because they were sending someone to meet me immediately. 25:10 Two federal agents arrived within the hour, and I told them everything. The room, the girls, the security company, and most importantly, the state patrol car hidden behind the building. 25:21 What happened afterward dominated the news for weeks, although they kept my identity private, thank God. 25:28 Shortly before sunrise, a joint task force composed of FBI agents and state police officers from another district, not the local one, raided the rest area. 25:38 They discovered 14 women and girls inside. The youngest victim was only 15 years old. All of them had been trafficked. 25:46 Roadside Protection Services turned out to be a shell company that had somehow secured a legitimate state contract to provide security at several rest areas along the interstate. 25:57 The people behind it had been using that official access as cover for their trafficking operation for nearly four years. 26:04 The most shocking revelation came when authorities arrested everyone connected to the organization. 26:10 Two local police officers were among those taken into custody. They had been using their patrol vehicles to transport victims and provide protection whenever the operation required it. 26:21 One of those officers was a sergeant with 18 years of service. 26:25 He had a family and three children and had somehow maintained a completely separate life without anyone around him knowing what he was doing. 26:33 Three months later, I testified before a grand jury. A screen concealed me so that the defendants could not see my face. 26:41 Every one of them was convicted. 26:43 The two police officers received sentences of 25 years to life. 26:47 The security guards were given similar punishments, and investigators identified three additional individuals responsible for managing the financial side of the operation. 26:57 The victims who survived received counseling and assistance as they attempted to rebuild their lives. although I doubt that any amount of therapy can erase what they endured. 27:07 As for me, I could no longer drive a truck. 27:10 Every rest area began to look threatening. Every security guard made me uneasy, and I could not stop wondering how many other operations like that might still exist, concealed in plain sight. 27:22 I now work in a warehouse and return home every night. 27:26 I also avoid the interstate whenever another route is available. 27:30 People consider me paranoid when I advise them to be careful at rest stops and warn them never to get out of their vehicles alone at night. 27:37 But I know what exists out there. I know that sometimes the very people entrusted with protecting us are the ones causing the harm. That knowledge permanently changed something fundamental about the way I view the world. 27:54 Story 3. 27:56 Mile marker 82 on Interstate 65 is the place where my life changed forever. 28:02 During my years with the Tennessee Highway Patrol, I had probably driven past that same green marker a thousand times. 28:09 I never imagined it would become a landmark permanently burned into my memory. 28:14 Traffic was light that Wednesday afternoon. There was only the familiar combination of semi-trucks and commuters traveling north toward Kentucky. 28:22 Spending 23 years behind a badge teaches you how to read vehicles in the same way other people read expressions. 28:29 The battered Corolla traveling at precisely 55 miles per hour in the right lane was trying far too hard to appear insignificant. 28:37 Its speed was perfect. Its lane position was flawless. 28:42 Everything about it suggested that someone had instructed the driver on exactly how to remain unnoticed. 28:48 A spiderweb-shaped crack spreading across the left tail light gave me legal grounds to initiate a traffic stop. 28:54 The driver pulled onto the shoulder with mechanical precision, placing the vehicle perfectly parallel to the painted line. 29:02 Even through my windshield, the maneuver looked rehearsed. 29:06 Before I had stepped out of my cruiser, the driver positioned both hands carefully at 10 and 2 on the steering wheel. 29:13 That type of practiced obedience has always made me look more closely. 29:17 I checked the license plate while approaching the vehicle. The car was registered to Paul of Cookville. His record was clean and contained nothing unusual. 29:27 But the moment I reached the driver's window and he lowered it, a powerful odor struck me. 29:32 Several air fresheners were competing against one another, producing a chemical cloud so strong that it caused my eyes to water. 29:41 Despite the 40-degree weather, Paul's forehead shone with sweat. 29:45 When he handed me his driver's license, his fingers trembled enough to make the plastic card flutter like the wing of a moth. 29:52 The man seated behind the wheel matched Paul's photograph, but nothing else about him resembled an ordinary motorist during a routine traffic stop. 30:01 When I asked where he was going, he answered with one word. 30:04 Memphis. 30:06 His eyes repeatedly shifted toward the rearview mirror. He was not checking the traffic behind him. He was using the back window to look toward the trunk. 30:15 He glanced at it, returned his attention to me, and then looked toward the trunk again. 30:20 His breathing came in short, controlled bursts, as if he were counting the seconds between each inhalation. 30:26 I instructed Paul to step out of the Corolla. He obeyed so quickly that he nearly fell while climbing from the car. 30:34 As he stood beside the vehicle, he constantly shifted his weight from one foot to the other. 30:39 His body rocked slightly, and his hands repeatedly opened and closed at his sides. 30:44 The temperature continued dropping as the sun descended behind us, yet fresh beads of perspiration kept forming above his upper lip. 30:52 Keeping my voice casual, I asked him about the air fresheners. 30:56 I acted as though I were merely curious about why he needed so many of them. 31:01 Paul stumbled through an explanation about purchasing the car second-hand. He claimed there had been an odor inside that he could not remove, something involving milk that had spilled during the summer. 31:12 His voice cracked when he said the word summer, and he immediately looked toward the trunk again. 31:18 That was when I heard something, or at least thought I did. 31:22 A quiet thump came from the rear of the Corolla. It might have been the exhaust system cooling. It could have been the wind striking the car at an unusual angle. 31:31 Paul heard it too. His entire body became rigid. He began speaking more rapidly, insisting that he needed to reach Memphis. He said he had a job interview the following morning and could not afford to be late. The words spilled from his mouth, but his feet remained fixed to the pavement as though they had been glued there. 31:50 I told him that I needed to inspect the vehicle. 31:53 I explained that it was standard procedure following a taillight violation and that I had to verify that everything else was functioning properly. 32:01 His expression changed. The nervousness gave way to something else, something desperate. 32:07 He asked whether the inspection was truly necessary. He promised to repair the taillight as soon as he reached Memphis and swore he would take care of it first thing in the morning. 32:17 When I continued insisting, he moved backward. It was only one step, but it was enough to make me adjust my position. 32:25 His keys remained in the ignition and the engine was still running. 32:29 I could see him estimating the distances around him. 32:32 I had seen that expression many times before. It belonged to someone trying to decide whether to flee, attack, or cooperate. 32:40 I maintained an even tone, assured him that the inspection would take only a minute, and ordered him to open the trunk. 32:47 He claimed the latch was broken. He said that he had been planning to repair it. He offered plenty of explanations, but none of them accounted for why his entire body was trembling. 32:58 I walked around the rear of the Corolla. Paul followed closely behind, continuing to talk about Memphis, job interviews, and defective latches. 33:07 Fresh scratches surrounded the trunk lock. They shone silver against the car's faded paint. 33:13 I pressed the release button inside the vehicle, but nothing happened. 33:17 See? Paul said. I told you it was broken. 33:21 His voice had become thin and unnaturally high. 33:25 I retrieved my flashlight and crouched beside the trunk to examine the locking mechanism. That was when I heard the sound clearly. This time it was not a single thump. It was movement. Intentional movement, followed by what sounded like breathing that belonged to neither Paul nor me. 33:42 I stood, looked directly into his eyes and ordered him to open the trunk immediately. 33:47 He shook his head and said that he could not do it. 33:50 Please, officer, just let me leave. I'll throw away the taillight. I'll never drive through Tennessee again. 33:57 I called for backup while keeping my attention fixed on Paul. The moment he heard me broadcast our location, his shoulders collapsed. 34:06 He sat down on the cold pavement, buried his head in his hands, and began saying that he had not known. 34:12 They had only paid him to drive, he claimed. He had been promised $500 to take the Corolla to Memphis and abandon it at a rest stop. He insisted that he had never looked inside and had not asked any questions. 34:25 He simply needed the money. 34:27 As we waited for additional units, the sounds from the trunk continued. They became stronger and more consistent, forming a rhythmic tapping pattern like someone attempting to send a signal. 34:39 I told Paul that we were going to open the trunk one way or another. He nodded in defeat, reached into his pocket and removed a second key that was not attached to his main keyring. 34:49 He explained that they had given it to him separately and ordered him never to use it unless he received specific instructions. 34:56 His hand trembled so severely when he held out the key that I had to take it from him. 35:00 The key slid smoothly into the lock. The trunk opened with a quiet click. 35:05 The smell reached me first, a mixture of human perspiration, fear, and a chemical odor resembling chlorine. 35:14 A girl was curled inside in a fetal position. 35:17 She appeared to be approximately 16 or 17 years old. 35:21 Duct tape bound her wrists and ankles. Another strip hung loosely from her mouth, where she had somehow managed to pull it free. 35:29 Her eyes were enormous as she blinked against the sudden light. Then she made a sound that was half sob and half gasp. 35:37 When I reached toward her, she recoiled and pushed herself against the wheel well. Her lips were cracked and bleeding, and when she attempted to speak only a hoarse rasp emerged. I told her that she was safe. 35:49 I repeated those words while using my knife to cut through the tape, but she continued staring beyond me at Paul. He was crying by then, and repeatedly insisting that he had not known she was so young. 36:01 He claimed he had known nothing beyond the place where he had been instructed to drive. 36:05 Backup reached us within minutes. 36:08 Two additional patrol cars arrived, along with the ambulance I had requested the moment I saw the girl. 36:14 The paramedics wrapped her in blankets and allowed her to drink water in small sips while they examined her vital signs. 36:20 According to what she was able to whisper, she had spent at least eight hours trapped inside the trunk. 36:26 She had been abducted from a shopping mall parking lot in Kentucky. She remembered seeing a white van, followed by waking in darkness and hearing the noise of tires against the road. 36:37 Her captors had transferred her twice before placing her in Paul's Corolla. 36:41 Each transfer involved a different vehicle, and every exchange took place at a rest stop. 36:47 While the emergency medical technicians treated her, Paul began talking to anyone willing to listen. 36:53 He provided the names of rest areas, scheduled arrival times, and the phone number that contacted him with instructions. 37:01 He swore that he had believed he was transporting drugs. According to him, they had said the cargo contained pills and that any unusual noises were merely packages shifting inside the trunk. 37:12 But his account kept changing, and everyone at the scene understood that he was lying about how much he knew. 37:19 The girl's name was Haley. 37:21 She told us that she had heard several voices during the transfers. More than one person had been involved. They used coded language to discuss packages and delivery schedules. 37:32 Even while tape covered her mouth, Haley had memorized parts of their conversations. 37:37 She repeated the words silently to herself so she could remain focused and preserve her sanity. They discussed roads. They also mentioned a warehouse somewhere near Louisville and talked about regular trips occurring every few days. 37:50 The detectives who arrived began mapping the information while Haley was still inside the ambulance. 37:56 This had not been a random or opportunistic crime. 37:59 It was an organized and methodical operation that recruited people like Paul, individuals desperate for quick money who would not ask inconvenient questions. The damage to the taillight had been accidental. 38:12 Haley had heard them discussing the importance of maintaining exact speeds and never giving police officers a reason to stop their vehicles, but they could not control every detail. 38:22 They had been unable to repair the crack that spread just far enough across the tail light to attract my attention at mile marker 82. 38:30 The information Paul provided that night tore the entire operation open, like pulling a loose thread from a cheap sweater. 38:37 The telephone number led to a disposable phone, but records from the cellular towers revealed patterns. The device had made repeated stops at specific locations across three states. 38:49 The FBI joined the investigation within a week and discovered the warehouse Haley had overheard the traffickers mention. 38:55 During the following month, authorities rescued 12 additional girls. Some had been missing for years. 39:02 Others had been abducted only days before they were found. 39:05 Police placed every rest stop Paul identified under surveillance. They captured three more drivers, each offering a similar explanation about easy money and avoiding questions. 39:16 Every arrest produced additional phone numbers, new locations, and more girls who were eventually able to return home. 39:24 Investigators followed financial transfers to accounts located in five separate states. 39:30 They uncovered fraudulent companies that existed only in official documents and an entire network that, according to federal prosecutors, had been operating for at least three years. 39:40 Eight months later, Haley testified in court. 39:44 Her voice remained steady as she identified two of the men who had moved her between vehicles. 39:49 She had returned to school and was attending therapy, doing her best to rebuild the pieces of her life. 39:56 Her parents sent me a letter thanking me for stopping the Corolla and for noticing the damaged tail light. But I continued thinking about all the other Corollas traveling at exactly 55 miles per hour. 40:07 All the other drivers displaying perfect lane discipline and rehearsed cooperation, whom I allowed to continue down the highway. 40:15 Paul received a 15-year sentence through a plea agreement in exchange for his cooperation. 40:20 The investigation remains active according to the people involved. New information continues arriving every week. I still patrol Interstate 65 and I still pass mile marker 82 during every shift. 40:34 Now I look for more than damaged taillights. I watch for vehicles attempting to disappear in plain sight. 40:41 I study drivers who know their rehearsed explanations too well. 40:45 I look for that specific kind of fear that has nothing to do with receiving a traffic citation. because now I understand what could be concealed inside those trunks. 40:54 I know someone might be lying in darkness, counting every passing minute and hoping that a stranger notices something wrong enough to take a closer look. 41:07 Story 4 After six years with the Colorado State Patrol, I believed I had developed reliable instincts for recognizing when something was wrong. 41:17 My 30th birthday was still two months away on that March morning in 2017, and I had stopped enough vehicles along Interstate 70 to distinguish between someone who had simply forgotten to renew their registration and someone deliberately avoiding the DMV for a more serious reason. 41:34 The silver Dodge caravan that passed my radar position near the Lyman exit displayed registration stickers that had expired the previous July. 41:42 They were faded and peeling around the edges. 41:45 It was a Wednesday, clear and mercilessly cold. The kind of high plains weather in which the sky seems to stretch endlessly, and there is nowhere for anyone to hide. 41:55 I activated my lights and pulled onto the highway behind the minivan. It drifted hesitantly toward the shoulder, and something about the way it moved made my instincts tighten. 42:06 Most drivers stop quickly when they notice flashing lights behind them. They may be irritated, but they cooperate. This driver traveled almost a quarter of a mile before finally pulling over. as if she were mentally working through several possible scenarios. 42:22 When I approached the driver's window, a woman in her mid-forties looked up at me with a smile that exposed too many teeth. 42:29 She had short brown hair, wire-rimmed glasses, and a purple fleece jacket with a motivational saying embroidered across the chest in white thread. 42:38 Before I could speak, she launched into an explanation. She claimed to be a foster caregiver transporting three children to Denver for a mandatory appointment with their caseworker. 42:48 Her hands never stopped moving while she spoke. She touched her necklace, readjusted her glasses, and repeatedly tightened her grip on the steering wheel. 42:59 She introduced herself as Denise Calabresi and continually emphasized how important it was to deliver the children to their appointment on time. 43:07 Her energy felt rehearsed almost as though she had practiced the entire speech beforehand. 43:13 I requested her license and registration. 43:16 While she searched through the glove compartment, I looked beyond her into the rear of the caravan. Three children occupied the middle and back seats. All of them were completely motionless. 43:27 The oldest appeared to be a girl of nine or ten. 43:30 Long dark hair covered part of her face as she leaned against the window. 43:34 Two younger boys sat in the other seats with their heads tipped forward at angles that looked uncomfortable and painful. 43:41 None of them moved. None blinked. They did not even appear to notice that a police officer was standing approximately five feet away. 43:49 Keeping my tone casual, I asked Denise whether the children were all right while carefully observing her response. 43:56 She gave them only the quickest glance before assuring me they were fine. 44:00 They were merely exhausted from starting the trip so early, she explained. She claimed she had picked them up from a group home in Burlington at 5 that morning. 44:09 They had stayed awake late the previous night, and children always fell asleep during car rides. 44:14 Her explanations came rapidly, with each version differing slightly from the one before it. 44:20 Throughout the conversation, she continued insisting that they needed to leave immediately or the children would miss their appointment. 44:27 I took her license and registration back to my patrol vehicle and instructed her to remain where she was while I checked the information. 44:35 At first glance, the documents appeared authentic. The Colorado driver's license had been issued two years earlier, and the vehicle registration was in her name. 44:44 Even before dispatch responded, however, something felt wrong. 44:49 The address connected to her license was a post office box in Grand Junction, more than 200 miles west. 44:55 Records showed that the minivan had been purchased for cash three months earlier from a private seller in Pueblo. 45:02 As I waited for additional information, I continued watching the caravan through my rearview mirror. 45:08 Denise sat stiffly behind the wheel with both hands resting on it. Although the engine was no longer running, none of the children had changed position. Not even once. 45:18 The girl's head remained pressed against the glass at precisely the same angle. One of the boys had his mouth hanging slightly open. 45:26 During the seven or eight minutes I had been observing them, he had never closed it, swallowed or displayed any of the tiny involuntary movements people normally make. 45:36 Then dispatch returned with information that transformed the entire situation. 45:41 Denise Calabresi had been arrested in Utah in 2015 for child endangerment, although the charges were later dismissed. 45:49 Even more troubling, the caravan had five previous owners during the preceding 18 months, something almost unheard of for a seven-year-old minivan. 45:58 What had started as a routine traffic stop had suddenly become something much darker. 46:03 I requested backup and approached the caravan again. This time I ordered Denise to step out. Her smile finally vanished. 46:11 She exited slowly while continuing to talk, still attempting to control the situation and dictate the narrative. 46:18 She retrieved a manila folder from the passenger seat and pushed it toward me, claiming that it contained every document required for transporting the children. 46:28 Court orders, foster care forms, and their medical records. I examined the pages while keeping Denise within my peripheral vision. 46:36 At first, the documents appeared official. They included agency letterhead, case numbers, and judicial signatures. 46:44 But I had encountered enough fraudulent paperwork during my career to recognize several subtle inconsistencies. 46:51 The fonts differed slightly from page to page. 46:54 One signature had clearly been copied and digitally pasted onto several separate documents. 47:00 The case numbers also followed a structure that did not match the numbering system Colorado used for child services records. 47:07 When I identified those discrepancies, Denise's entire personality shifted. 47:12 The pleasant foster mother persona disappeared. She became defensive and angry, demanding to know why I was harassing someone whose only intention was to assist vulnerable children. 47:23 She insisted that I was going to make them late for their appointment. She threatened that there would be consequences and claimed that I did not understand how the system operated. 47:33 My backup arrived within 10 minutes. The responding trooper was Vincent Reyes, someone with whom I had worked dozens of times. While Vincent spoke with Denise and kept her away from the minivan, I opened the sliding door to examine the children. 47:47 The smell reached me immediately. The air inside was stale and repeatedly recycled, mixed with a chemical sweetness I could not identify. 47:57 The girl in the rear seat did not react when I greeted her. Her eyes were open but unfocused, fixed on nothing. 48:04 When I gently touched her shoulder, she produced a small noise, not quite a word, but more like a confused murmur. 48:11 The two boys were in similar conditions. 48:14 They were technically awake but not fully conscious. 48:17 When they attempted to answer my questions, their movements were slow and uncoordinated. 48:22 I asked the girl her name. Almost 30 seconds passed before she responded. 48:27 Her speech was slurred as if she were waking from anesthesia. 48:31 She said her name was Olivia, but she could not provide her last name. She could not tell me where she came from or explain why she was inside the minivan. 48:40 The younger boy, who appeared to be approximately five, could not answer anything. 48:45 He simply stared at his own hands as though he had never seen them before. 48:50 I immediately requested an ambulance. I told dispatch that we had three minors who appeared to have been drugged and asked for a supervisor to respond. 48:59 Denise began shouting, and then she started genuinely screaming. 49:03 She accused us of destroying the children's lives. She claimed their biological parents were monsters and insisted that she was protecting the children from abuse. 49:14 She repeatedly yelled that we did not understand, that the system was broken, and that good people had an obligation to intervene whenever the government failed. 49:23 Vincent eventually had to restrain and handcuff her after she attempted to run back toward the caravan. Throughout the confrontation, she shouted names and personal details. 49:33 She claimed Olivia's father had been reported for abuse 12 separate times. 49:38 She said one boy's mother was an addict and insisted that somebody needed to rescue them. But when I asked how she knew the children, how she had obtained custody, and where the legitimate court orders were, she became silent. 49:52 She merely stared at me with a deeply unsettling conviction in her eyes, as though she sincerely believed she was the hero. 49:59 The ambulance arrived and paramedics placed all three children on gurneys. 50:04 Olivia struggled to remain conscious but repeatedly drifted off in the middle of speaking. 50:09 The smallest boy had vomited on himself at some point and did not appear to realize it. 50:15 Doctors at the hospital in Lyman stabilized the children and performed blood tests. 50:20 The results showed dangerous concentrations of Diffy identified in the report as the active ingredient in sleep medication. 50:28 Based on the concentrations in their blood, The physician believed all three children had been systematically drugged for at least three or four days. 50:36 They were severely dehydrated and malnourished. They also displayed evidence of having been restrained for long periods. 50:43 Olivia had ligature marks around her wrists that were already several days old. 50:48 Approximately six hours after arriving at the hospital, Olivia finally became coherent enough to speak with investigators. 50:56 She explained that a woman had taken her from a playground near her school in Kansas five days earlier. 51:01 The woman told Olivia that her mother had sent someone to collect her because there was an emergency. 51:06 Olivia remembered being confined in a basement somewhere. She had been given medicine that made her sleep, and she had heard other people nearby discussing the need to save children. 51:17 The boys shared similar accounts, although the younger one remained too disoriented to provide many details. 51:23 Both had been taken from the same location in Kansas during the previous week. 51:28 What investigators uncovered during the following weeks was somehow worse than one isolated kidnapping. Because the children had been carried across state lines, FBI agents became involved immediately. 51:40 They uncovered a network of individuals communicating through private social media groups who believed they were rescuing children from abusive homes. 51:49 These were not licensed foster care organizations or legitimate child protection agencies. They were ordinary citizens, dozens of them scattered throughout several states, who had convinced themselves that the legal system was failing children and that they needed to act independently. 52:06 They referred to themselves as child advocates and freedom networkers. 52:10 They communicated through encrypted messaging applications and private groups with names such as Justice for Innocence and Safe Harbor Collective. 52:19 Denise had belonged to the organization for nearly two years. 52:22 Records from her phone contained hundreds of messages coordinating operations the members called extractions. 52:29 They circulated information concerning families involved in custody disputes, parents who had been reported to Child Protection Services, and any other situation in which the group decided a child was in danger. 52:42 They would then organize abductions, manufacture false paperwork, arrange temporary locations in which to conceal the children, and establish transportation routes to transfer them to other members in different states. 52:55 The most disturbing aspect was how thoroughly they justified their actions. 52:59 Investigators discovered manifestos and shared documents in which members described themselves as warriors for children. 53:07 They wrote about traditional institutions failing and their supposed moral responsibility to intervene. They saved screenshots of news reports involving child abuse, social media posts written by parents venting about custody conflicts, and anything else they could distort into supposed evidence that their intervention was necessary. 53:27 Olivia's father had never been charged with abuse. 53:30 The 12 reports Denise mentioned had originated during a hostile divorce. 53:35 Olivia's mother had submitted complaints that authorities investigated and determined were unsubstantiated. 53:42 Someone inside the network interpreted those findings as proof that the system was concealing abuse and they selected Olivia for an extraction. 53:50 The two boys had been living with their grandmother while their mother completed a rehabilitation program. Their caseworker remained in regular contact with them and they were scheduled to reunite with their mother within one month. 54:03 The network found a social media post discussing the mother's previous addiction and decided the boys needed to be rescued. 54:10 Members watched the grandmother's house and studied her daily routine. They abducted the children from the backyard while she was inside preparing lunch. 54:19 Eventually, authorities arrested more than 40 people across seven states. 54:23 As the investigation grew, Agents discovered children being held in basements, spare bedrooms, and even a converted garage. 54:32 In Arizona, a couple was keeping two siblings whom they had abducted from a shopping mall parking lot in New Mexico. 54:39 Some children had been missing for months. Their families had been left desperate and emotionally destroyed while their captors sincerely believed they were keeping the children safe. 54:48 The organization maintained a system for producing fraudulent identities and forged papers that appeared authentic enough to deceive most people during a quick inspection. 54:58 Some members worked in printing shops. Others had graphic design experience. Several had learned how to duplicate official seals and signatures. 55:07 Denise had been holding children at a property outside Grand Junction before transporting them to other participants in the network. 55:14 Investigators discovered a room inside that house arranged like a dormitory. Six mattresses covered the floor, bottles of sleep medication filled a cabinet, and restraints were concealed inside a closet. 55:27 She had been moving children through that property for more than a year. 55:31 Some of the recovered children could no longer remember their real names because their captors had forced them to use false identities for so long. 55:39 What continues to disturb me most is how close Denise came to succeeding. If the registration stickers had not expired, if I had been operating radar somewhere else that morning, or if I had failed to notice how unnaturally still those children were, she would have reached Denver. 55:56 Contacts there were prepared to receive the three children and transport them even farther into the network, possibly out of the country eventually. 56:05 Olivia might have vanished completely, leaving her parents to spend the remainder of their lives wondering what had happened to their daughter. 56:12 The two boys would have become ghosts. 56:15 Their grandmother blamed herself until the day she died. All three children required months of therapy. 56:21 According to the victim advocate who remained in contact with me, Olivia continues to suffer from nightmares. Denise Calabresi received a sentence of 30 years in federal prison. 56:32 She never expressed remorse. 56:34 During sentencing, she delivered a speech claiming that history would eventually prove her right. She insisted she had done what was necessary and declared that the real criminals were the people who allowed children to suffer. 56:46 47 other members of the network receive prison terms ranging from 5 to 25 years. 56:52 The FBI closed the online groups, but I know similar organizations probably still exist under different names and on other platforms. 57:01 People who have convinced themselves that their distorted reasoning gives them the right to steal children. 57:06 I think about that every time I stop a vehicle now. Every expired registration, every minor traffic offense, and every seemingly ordinary stop could become the loose thread that exposes something horrifying. 57:19 That silver minivan taught me that evil does not always resemble what we expect. 57:24 Sometimes it looks like a middle-aged woman wearing a purple fleece jacket with an inspirational message embroidered across her chest, smiling through the driver's window while three drugged children remain silent behind her. 57:41 Story 5. 57:43 People frequently ask why I drive only during daylight hours now and why I organize my routes so that I never have to stop anywhere isolated. 57:51 The explanation is complicated and honestly most people do not truly want to hear it. But I am going to tell you anyway because what happened along Interstate 20 permanently changed the way I view the highway. 58:03 April 2015 marked my 12th year as a highway patrol officer with the Alabama Department of Public Safety. 58:11 My examination for promotion to sergeant was only two weeks away, and I had been volunteering for additional shifts to demonstrate that I was capable of accepting the responsibility. 58:21 My assigned territory covered the section of Interstate 20 between the Georgia State Line and Birmingham, approximately 90 miles of pavement that I understood better than the streets in my own neighborhood. 58:33 Rest areas were usually the calmest locations during my shifts. Most of the people there were truckers catching a few hours of sleep or families allowing their children to use up some energy before continuing their trips. 58:45 Everything appeared ordinary that Tuesday morning in early April when dispatch directed me to mile marker 165. The rest area stood approximately 40 miles east of Birmingham. It was one of those aging facilities the state repeatedly promised to renovate but never found the money to improve. There was nothing remarkable about it. Only restrooms, vending machines, and several picnic tables beneath a group of pine trees. 59:11 I entered the parking lot at approximately 7 in the morning. 59:14 The rising sun was already dissolving the fog, and I counted perhaps four vehicles scattered around the property. 59:21 A silver Toyota Camry was parked alone at the far end of the lot, separated from the main building. 59:27 Its driver's door stood open. 59:29 My first thought was that someone had accidentally left the door ajar while hurrying toward the restroom. 59:35 Then I moved closer. A man was collapsed against the steering wheel and blood marked the window. 59:41 A Glock 19 rested on the passenger seat. My training immediately took control. 59:47 I secured the area and requested backup and emergency medical assistance, even though I could already tell the man was dead. 59:55 His name was Jeffrey Puit. He was a 46-year-old sales manager from Atlanta who had been traveling home after attending a conference in Mississippi. He was married and both of his children were in college. 60:07 The investigation continued for three days before officials determined that he had taken his own life. 60:14 After completing my report, I did not spend much time thinking about the incident. 60:19 Suicides occurred along highways more often than the public realized. 60:23 Usually the victims were men dealing with divorces, bankruptcy, or some other pressure they believed they could no longer endure. 60:31 The file was transferred to the county coroner, and I continued to my next assignment. Six weeks later, on a Wednesday near the end of May, dispatch sent me to another rest area at mile marker 142. 60:44 It was the same interstate but a different facility. This one was smaller, consisting only of a parking lot, restrooms, and an area where travelers could walk their pets. 60:54 A white Ford F-150 stood by itself near the treeline. Inside was a woman named Angela Cortez, a nursing supervisor from Louisiana who had been driving to Atlanta to visit her sister. 61:06 She was 51 years old, had recently received a promotion, and according to her relatives, had no history of depression. 61:14 She had been shot once in the right temple with a Smith & Wesson revolver inherited from her late father. 61:20 The cleaning staff discovered her that morning with the firearm still clutched in her right hand. 61:25 Once again, investigators classified the death as a suicide. And once again, something about the scene disturbed me, although I could not explain exactly what it was. 61:36 The third incident happened in early July at mile marker 88 at a rest area on the opposite side of Birmingham that technically fell outside my normal patrol district. 61:46 I learned about it only because the responding trooper, a man named Calvin who had attended the academy with me, mentioned the case during a shift change. 61:56 It was another apparent suicide at another secluded rest area involving another victim who had no clear reason to end his life. 62:03 This victim was Howard Chen, a 63-year-old restaurant owner from Texas who had been traveling to a food service convention in Georgia. 62:12 He was a grandfather of five and considered a pillar of his community in Houston. 62:17 He had supposedly shot himself with a Ruger. 62:20 Investigators found the weapon wiped clean of fingerprints except for his own. 62:25 Calvin admitted that the scene looked staged to him, too orderly and too convenient. 62:30 Nevertheless, the physical evidence appeared to support suicide and authorities closed the case within one week because they had no proof of criminal involvement. 62:40 After speaking with Calvin, I began maintaining my own records. I wrote down every date and location in a notebook stored inside my patrol vehicle. By the middle of August, two additional bodies had been discovered at rest areas along Interstate 20. 62:55 Both deaths were classified as suicides within days. 62:59 The pattern had become impossible for me to dismiss. 63:02 All five people died between 6 and 8 in the morning. 63:06 Every death occurred at an older facility that received relatively little traffic. 63:10 Each victim suffered one gunshot wound to the head and every weapon was legally registered to the person who died. 63:18 The locations were spread across almost 200 miles of interstate, but I was convinced that something connected the deaths beyond chance. 63:26 During our weekly briefing, I presented my concerns to Sergeant Daniels. I placed a map in front of him on which I had marked the timeline in every location with red circles. 63:36 He listened with his arms folded and his expression impossible to read. 63:40 When I finished, he told me that five suicides occurring during four months across several counties did not amount to a pattern worth pursuing, particularly when the evidence at every scene supported the official findings. 63:52 He instructed me to concentrate on my normal responsibilities and stop spending time on closed investigations, but I could not abandon it. 64:01 That night I used official channels to request copies of all five incident reports. 64:06 I claimed that I needed the material for a training presentation concerning suicide prevention. 64:12 The documents arrived three days later. I spent the entire weekend examining every detail with a highlighter and a notebook beside me. 64:20 The ballistic evidence caught my attention first. In three of the five cases, forensic examiners had documented unusual stippling around the entrance wounds. 64:30 Those patterns were inconsistent with the injuries normally created by a self-inflicted gunshot at close range. 64:36 The powder burns indicated that the barrel had been held at a slightly different angle from the one a person would ordinarily use when shooting themselves. 64:44 The discrepancy was subtle enough to escape notice when each death was examined separately. 64:50 Once I placed all five reports beside one another, however, the similarities were unmistakable. Then I examined the timing more carefully. Every victim had died within the same 90-minute period, between 6.15 and 7.45 in the morning, when traffic through rest areas was usually at its lowest. 65:09 The security cameras at those facilities were either non-functional or positioned to monitor only the entrances to the restrooms rather than the parking lots. 65:18 Whoever was responsible understood the layouts of these rest areas and the limitations of their surveillance systems better than most police officers would. 65:26 My next step was examining highway camera recordings. I submitted requests through the Department of Transportation database. Most law enforcement agencies do not realize how much video is archived, particularly along major interstates where traffic cameras operate continuously. 65:43 I concentrated on the hours immediately preceding each death and searched for vehicles that appeared near more than one scene. 65:50 The process required several weeks because I could access the database only while working without drawing attention to what I was doing. 65:58 Near the end of September, I finally discovered what I had been searching for. A dark blue Dodge Ram with an extended cab appeared in recordings made within two hours of four separate rest area deaths. 66:10 Its license plates were not visible in most of the images. 66:13 The truck always traveled eastbound, always appeared during the early morning, and always left the interstate using the exit immediately beyond each rest area. 66:22 I traced its route backward and learned that it entered the highway from a different access ramp each time, preventing it from establishing a predictable pattern. 66:31 Then I noticed another detail, one that made my chest tighten. 66:36 A light bar had been installed across the roof of the truck. It resembled the type used by volunteer firefighters and private security contractors. 66:45 Owning one was completely legal. but activating it on a public roadway was prohibited unless the driver was authorized emergency personnel. 66:54 I copied every available image of the RAM, burned the files onto a disk, and secured it inside my personal locker at the station. 67:02 The following morning, I drove to the Alabama Bureau of Investigation field office in Birmingham and requested to speak with whoever handled serial crimes. They referred me to Special Agent Fitzgerald, a woman in her early 50s who had investigated organized crime before transferring to the Major Cases Division. 67:21 I showed her everything. The chronology, the inconsistent ballistic findings, the truck, the camera footage, all of it. 67:30 She listened without interrupting and recorded notes in a leather-bound notebook that appeared older than I was. 67:36 When I finished, she asked only one question. 67:39 Does anyone else know you've been investigating this? 67:43 I told her no. 67:44 My sergeant had rejected my concerns and I had continued examining the deaths alone. 67:50 Fitzgerald nodded slowly and placed a call while I sat across from her. Twenty minutes later, two additional agents entered the conference room. 67:58 My private inquiry had suddenly become an official investigation. 68:03 Once the Bureau obtained the footage and the ballistic comparisons, it moved quickly. 68:08 Within 72 hours, technicians enhanced the camera images, reconstructed part of the truck's bin, and compared that information with vehicle registration databases in six states. 68:20 The Dodge Ram belonged to Glenn Whittaker, a 57-year-old former sheriff's deputy from Mississippi. 68:27 His department had dismissed him in 2013 following numerous complaints involving excessive force. 68:33 Whitaker sued for wrongful termination, lost the lawsuit, and essentially vanished from law enforcement circles. 68:41 Property records indicated that he owned a small residence outside Meridian, but neighbors reported that they saw him only occasionally. 68:49 His financial records showed cash deposits being made every few weeks. The amounts suggested that he had some form of employment, although he declared no income. 68:59 Investigators also learned that he retained access to decommissioned police equipment and badges through a friend who operated a law enforcement surplus store. 69:07 Fitzgerald told me the Bureau believed Whitaker was carrying out fraudulent traffic stops at rest areas. He used the emergency lights and credentials to approach people who assumed they were speaking with a legitimate officer. 69:19 Their theory was that he selected individuals traveling alone and waited until they stopped at remote facilities. 69:26 He would then approach them, display his badge, and invent some type of traffic violation. 69:32 After persuading them to leave their vehicles or catching them in a vulnerable position inside, he forced them to use their own firearms and arrange the scenes to resemble suicides. 69:43 The ballistic discrepancies resulted from Whittaker controlling the weapon while attempting to make each gunshot appear self-inflicted. 69:50 Carrying that out successfully required an understanding of forensic investigative procedures. 69:56 His method was disciplined, deliberate, and terrifying because it manipulated the one symbol most highway travelers trusted automatically. 70:04 The Bureau planned to monitor Whitaker's property and search the interstate for his ram, but Fitzgerald proposed another approach. 70:12 She asked whether I would be willing to act as bait by driving my personal vehicle along Interstate 20 during the early morning hours and attempting to attract his attention. 70:21 The operation would be dangerous, but federal agents would continuously track my position through GPS, and backup units would remain no more than three minutes away. 70:32 I agreed. Part of me wanted Whittaker captured. 70:36 Another part knew those five victims deserved the justice their families had not received. 70:41 For two weeks in November, I drove my personal Subaru Outback along Interstate 20 during the early morning shift. 70:49 stopping at different rest areas between Birmingham and the Georgia Line. 70:54 The Bureau equipped my vehicle with concealed video cameras and recording devices. They also gave me an emergency button disguised as my key fob. 71:03 Every morning felt like balancing on a tightrope. 71:06 I needed to appear vulnerable enough to draw Whitaker toward me while remaining alert enough to react if the encounter became dangerous. 71:14 On the 14th day, a Friday morning in the middle of November, I entered the rest area at mile marker 100 to 51 at approximately 6.30. 71:23 The lot was deserted except for a semi-truck at the distant end. Its driver was probably asleep in the cab. 71:30 I parked beside the picnic area, turned off the engine, and pretended to examine my phone. Fifteen minutes passed. Then I saw the vehicle in my rearview mirror. 71:40 The dark blue Dodge Ram rolled slowly into the parking lot, its roof-mounted light bar clearly visible. 71:47 My heart pounded against my ribs, but I forced myself to remain calm and behave naturally. 71:53 The Ram stopped two spaces behind me at an angle that allowed its headlights to shine directly onto my vehicle. 71:59 A man climbed out wearing what appeared to be a sheriff's deputy uniform, complete with a badge and utility belt. 72:06 He approached my driver's window with the distinctive stride law enforcement officers develop, commanding without appearing openly aggressive. 72:14 When he tapped on my window, I lowered it and attempted to look confused rather than frightened. 72:20 He identified himself as Deputy Whitaker. 72:23 He claimed that authorities had received a report concerning a vehicle resembling mine that had been involved in a hit-and-run collision near mile marker 165. 72:33 He requested my license and registration. 72:36 His voice was composed and professional, exactly like that of a genuine police officer. 72:42 I gave him the documents, attempting to gain time while the backup units moved closer. 72:47 He studied them for approximately 30 seconds, returned them, and instructed me to step out of the outback. 72:54 That was when I noticed his right hand moving toward his belt, not toward his radio or citation book. but toward a holster containing a Beretta 9mm. 73:04 I pressed the concealed emergency button. Everything that followed happened in less than 90 seconds. 73:10 Four unmarked bureau vehicles raced into the rest area from both directions and blocked every possible exit. 73:17 Whitaker immediately understood what was happening. His expression transformed from professional composure to pure fury. 73:25 He reached for his weapon, but the agents were already outside their vehicles with their guns drawn, shouting commands. 73:32 Whitaker slowly raised his hands. The counterfeit badge on his chest reflected the morning sunlight. 73:38 The agents forced him onto the pavement, placed him in handcuffs, and searched the ram at the scene. 73:44 Inside the vehicle, they discovered decommissioned badges belonging to three different agencies, two sets of magnetic emergency lights, a police radio scanner, and a laptop containing surveillance photographs of at least 15 rest areas along Interstate 20 and Interstate 59. 74:03 They also recovered a notebook containing dates, times, and descriptions of vehicles, Several entries corresponded with all five victims. 74:11 A Taurus pistol was located in the glove compartment. 74:15 Ballistic testing later connected it to gunshot residue recovered from two of the crime scenes. 74:21 Residue that should not have been present if those deaths had genuinely been suicides. 74:25 Whitaker's federal trial continued for six weeks. Prosecutors charged him with five counts of first-degree murder, unlawfully impersonating a law enforcement officer, and approximately a dozen additional felonies. 74:39 The evidence against him was overwhelming, including the ballistic matches, the surveillance recordings, and the materials recovered from his truck. 74:48 His attorneys argued that he had merely been carrying out civilian patrols and had no connection to the deaths. 74:54 The jury deliberated for fewer than four hours before finding him guilty on every count. 74:59 Whitaker received five consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. 75:05 The victims' families finally learned what had happened, although I doubt the answers did much to reduce their suffering. 75:12 I earned my promotion to sergeant six months later, but I have never stopped thinking about those two weeks in November or how narrowly I avoided becoming the sixth entry in Whittaker's notebook. 75:23 Today I oversee rest area safety programs for the state. I work to ensure that surveillance cameras cover parking lots and that more officers patrol those facilities during the early morning hours. 75:35 People still ask why I am so relentless about the issue, and why I continue requesting money for security measures that no one else considers necessary. 75:44 I tell them that I have witnessed what happens when we fail to watch carefully enough, when someone takes advantage of the unquestioning trust people place in a badge and a uniform. 75:55 That response usually ends the discussion because, deep down, no one wants to consider the possibility that the person pulling them over may not be who they claim to be. 76:10 Story six After 15 years on the force, I believed I had encountered everything. 76:17 That was what I repeatedly told myself during the seemingly endless overnight shifts I spent patrolling Interstate 40 between Flagstaff and the Nevada border. 76:27 My sergeant liked to joke that nothing interesting ever occurred on a Wednesday night in November. 76:32 Most of the time he was correct. 76:34 I had spent much of 2013 issuing speeding citations and helping stranded drivers replace flat tires. 76:42 My daughter had turned six that fall, and I had been accepting additional shifts to save money for a birthday trip to Disneyland the following summer. 76:50 The work had become predictable, even comfortable. That was probably why I nearly ignored the notification that appeared on my automated license plate reader at approximately two in the morning. 77:01 The system emitted a sharp electronic tone that always made the coffee inside my cup holder jump. 77:07 A silver 2007 Ford Taurus had just passed my position while traveling west. 77:13 Its license plate was registered to a vehicle associated with a missing person investigation in Indiana. 77:19 There was no arrest warrant and no report identifying the car as stolen. The database contained only an alert requesting that officers make contact with the driver and report the encounter. 77:30 During my entire career, I had received perhaps three or four similar notifications. Most turned out to involve clerical mistakes or relatives who had voluntarily disappeared before someone reported them missing. 77:43 Still, procedure was procedure. 77:45 I activated my emergency lights and entered the highway. 77:49 Ahead of me, the Taurus's brake lights glowed red against the darkness. The driver did not accelerate or attempt to escape. The car moved smoothly onto the shoulder, its tires grinding across the gravel, and stopped completely while the turn signal continued blinking. 78:06 That should have been my first indication that something was seriously wrong. 78:10 Most ordinary motorists experience at least a little panic when emergency lights appear behind them. This driver seemed to have been waiting for it. I approached with my flashlight and performed the standard visual inspection through the rear window before reaching the driver's side. 78:25 What I saw stopped me halfway through a step. The entire back seat had been removed. There was no upholstery or fabric, only exposed metal supports and springs resembling the stripped skeleton of an animal. 78:38 Every window, both front and rear, had been covered from the inside with reflective silver material, the same type used in emergency blankets included in survival kits. 78:48 The material caught the beam of my flashlight and reflected it toward me in broken patterns. 78:53 Through the uncovered spaces, I could distinguish several shapes in the rear compartment. 78:58 Some appeared to be duffel bags. Another looked like a bundle of chains lying on the floor. 79:04 My hand moved instinctively toward my radio, but I did not report anything yet. 79:09 Some people lived in their vehicles. Perhaps the driver was simply an unusual traveler who had made strange modifications to his car. 79:18 That was the explanation I tried to accept as I reached the driver's window and tapped the glass with my knuckles. 79:24 The window lowered. 79:25 The odor reached me first. 79:27 It did not smell like an ordinary car filled with fast food containers or air fresheners. The scent was chemical and harsh, resembling industrial cleaning solution mixed with perspiration. 79:39 The driver was a white man who appeared to be in his early 40s. His thinning brown hair clung to his forehead. but his face made my pulse accelerate. 79:49 Dark purple bruises extended across his left cheek and temple. They were recent enough that the edges still had an ugly yellow-green color. 79:57 His right eye was bloodshot. 80:00 The normally white area had turned almost entirely red, as if a blood vessel had ruptured. 80:05 Additional bruises encircled his neck. They resembled finger marks left by someone attempting to strangle him. 80:12 He wore a stained gray hooded sweatshirt with the sleeves pushed upward. 80:17 More bruising covered his forearms, along with crisscross defensive injuries. 80:22 Despite his condition, he smiled at me. He did not seem frightened or guilty. 80:27 He merely appeared exhausted. 80:30 Evening, officer, he said in a raspy voice. 80:33 I figured you'd stop me sooner or later. 80:36 I requested his license and registration. 80:39 My voice remained controlled even though every instinct urged me to call for backup immediately. 80:45 He handed over the documents without hesitation. 80:48 Every movement was slow and intentional, almost as though he were being careful not to frighten me. 80:54 His license identified him as Gregory Allen Brenner and listed an address in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the same state connected to the missing person notification. 81:04 I directed my flashlight beyond him toward the passenger seat. A clipboard rested there with what appeared to be printed photographs attached to official looking forms with paper clips. 81:15 Mr. Brenner, I need you to step out of the car. Keep your hands where I can see them. 81:19 He nodded with the same weary cooperation and opened the door. 81:23 When he stood I noticed that he limped and avoided placing weight on his left leg. Without being instructed he positioned himself beside the torus and placed both palms flat against the roof, as though he had gone through this process before. 81:37 While checking him for weapons I asked what had caused the bruises. He did not react when I touched his ribs, although I could feel the swelling beneath his sweatshirt. 81:47 Got into a fight with a runner two days ago in Pennsylvania, he'd replied matter-of-factly. 81:53 The kid was stronger than he looked. 81:55 Seventeen years old and built like a linebacker. 81:58 I had to use pepper spray to get him under control. 82:02 A runner. 82:03 That word remained suspended between us. 82:06 I stepped backward and told him to turn around slowly. 82:10 What kind of work do you do, Mr. Brenner? 82:13 He met my gaze. 82:14 I saw no obvious deception in his expression, only exhaustion that seemed to reach into his bones. 82:21 I recover runaway teenagers for their families, he answered. 82:25 Private contracts, usually through a service based in Ohio. Parents hire the company when their children disappear and the police can't respond quickly enough. 82:35 I find them, establish contact, and transport them home. 82:39 Everything I do is legal, officer. All the paperwork is inside the car, signed parental consent forms, photographs, last known locations, everything. 82:50 That was when I requested backup. 82:52 Something about the practiced, clinical way he delivered the explanation caused my stomach to twist. 82:58 While waiting for my partner, I questioned Brenner about the modifications made to the Taurus. He described each alteration as casually as a tradesman explaining the equipment installed on a work vehicle. 83:10 Removing the rear seat, he said, allowed him to clean and disinfect the area more easily between transports. 83:16 The reflective covering prevented runaways from signaling to people outside the car or breaking a window to escape. 83:23 According to him, the reinforced trunk provided secure storage for personal possessions, so the teenagers could not reach anything dangerous while being transported. 83:33 They can become violent, he added, touching the bruising on his face. 83:37 Especially the ones who've lived on the street for several months. 83:41 They don't understand that I'm trying to help them return home. 83:44 My partner, Officer Janet Curritz, arrived within 10 minutes. As soon as she examined the condition of the vehicle, she used her radio to request a supervisor. 83:54 Brenner remained composed throughout the encounter. He leaned against the hood with his arms folded and observed us with the same patient, exhausted expression. 84:03 He gave us permission to search the Taurus. What we discovered made the situation exponentially more troubling. 84:10 Beneath a thick wool blanket inside the trunk was a metal toolbox. It contained zip ties, duct tape, a taser, two-way radios, and a locked leather pouch that Brenner claimed held medical sedatives. 84:25 For extreme situations, he explained when Kurtz lifted the pouch, If they become dangerous to themselves or someone else during transport, I have a standing prescription from a physician who works for the company. 84:37 The clipboard from the passenger seat contained files concerning six teenagers. Each file included a professional photograph, a physical description, a list of known associates, and locations where that teenager had reportedly been seen. 84:53 Three folders bore red stamps reading Recovered. The remaining three cases were still active. 84:59 One active file concerned Cassidy, a 16-year-old girl from South Bend. 85:05 A handwritten note in the margin read, Last seen Sunday near Truck Stop, Reno area. Sighting confirmed. Proceed cautiously. 85:14 Has a knife. 85:16 The photograph showed a blonde teenager with a pierced nose and frightened eyes. 85:21 My supervisor, Sergeant Dalton, arrived with two more patrol units. He immediately moved Brenner away from us and conducted a separate interview. 85:29 While that was happening, Kurtz and I began making telephone calls. The company Brenner had identified, Homeward Solutions LLC, existed. 85:38 It maintained a website that advertised family reunification services. But the story quickly began collapsing when we contacted the Ohio Attorney General's office. 85:49 Officials there had no record of a legitimate bail enforcement or recovery company operating under that name. 85:55 Its business license had been registered only eight months earlier, using a post office box as its address. 86:02 A background check revealed that Brenner had previously been arrested twice in Illinois for unlawful restraint. 86:08 Both charges had ultimately been reduced to misdemeanors. 86:12 In 2009, a bail bond company had fired him for using excessive force against a fugitive. 86:19 None of that supported his claim that he was a professional contractor providing services to families. 86:24 The parental consent forms appeared convincing at first, but every signature displayed variations of the same handwriting. 86:32 None of the telephone numbers supposedly belonging to parents connected to an active line. 86:37 The missing person database ultimately exposed the operation. 86:41 When we compared the names and photographs in Brenner's files against active cases, we discovered that four of the six teenagers were officially classified as endangered runaways. 86:52 But none of the families named in those reports had ever hired anyone to locate their children. 86:57 In fact, two families specifically told investigators that someone had contacted them, claiming to possess information about their missing children and demanded money in return. 87:09 A mother in Wisconsin had transferred $3,000 to Homeward Solutions before the company abruptly ended all communication with her. 87:17 Her daughter, 14-year-old Bethany, had been missing for seven weeks when we stopped Brenner. We discovered Bethany's jacket inside his trunk. Beside it was a prepaid phone containing messages about collection locations and delivery fees. 87:32 Those conversations mentioned additional drivers, other vehicles, and areas they called collection zones at truck stops and bus terminals across five states. 87:42 We arrested Brenner immediately on charges of kidnapping, extortion, and transporting minors across state lines. 87:49 He did not resist or immediately request an attorney. He simply continued insisting that he was performing legitimate work for desperate families. 87:58 During processing, he identified three additional drivers operating along the same circuit. He also revealed the name of the person directing the organization. Karl Novak, a former private investigator operating from a storage unit in Dayton. 88:13 Because the crimes crossed several state boundaries, the FBI joined the case within hours. 88:19 What federal investigators uncovered was worse than anything we had imagined. 88:24 Novak had operated the scheme for at least two years. He deliberately targeted vulnerable runaways who had already been reported missing. 88:32 His drivers searched for those children at shelters, street corners, and other places where young runaways gathered. 88:39 They either lured them with promises of assistance or physically abducted them whenever an opportunity appeared. 88:45 Some teenagers remained confined inside modified vehicles for days, while Novak contacted their families and pretended to represent a legitimate recovery agency. 88:55 When a family paid, the organization occasionally returned the child, traumatized but alive. 89:02 If relatives refused or could not produce the money, the teenagers were abandoned in unfamiliar locations far from where they had been captured. 89:10 In worse cases, they were sold to other criminal organizations with which Novak maintained connections. 89:16 Fully investigating and prosecuting the case required eight months. Authorities recovered 11 teenagers in total. 89:23 Cassidy was found in a motel outside Reno three days after Brenner's arrest. 89:28 During one transport, she had been locked inside his trunk for six hours. 89:33 When he stopped for the night, he moved her into a motel room he had rented with cash. 89:38 Bethany was discovered alive with relatives in Florida. 89:42 Another of Novak's drivers had apparently retained some measure of conscience. 89:46 Instead of obeying orders, he left Bethany somewhere she would receive care. 89:51 Brenner was sentenced to 18 years in federal prison. 89:54 Novak received 35 years. 89:57 The other drivers were given sentences ranging from 8 to 22 years, depending on how deeply each had participated in the crimes. 90:05 I testified during three separate trials. Every time I had to examine those case files again and look at the frightened faces in the photographs, I felt physically ill. 90:15 What remains with me most is not even the violence or the cruelty. It is how ordinary Brenner made the operation sound that night beside the highway. How sincerely he appeared to believe that he was providing a legitimate service. 90:29 Sometimes that is what evil looks like. It is not always a monster hiding in the darkness. 90:35 Sometimes it is simply an exhausted man in a stained sweatshirt who has persuaded himself that everything he does is justified. 90:43 I continue patrolling the same section of highway. But now, regardless of how routine an automated notification appears, I never dismiss one. 90:57 Story 7 I had been working in highway maintenance for almost eight years when the case first appeared in the news. 91:05 At the time, most of my assignments involved long overnight drives between small towns. 91:10 I usually worked alone, inspecting traffic cameras and checking road barriers. 91:15 That section of highway had always been peaceful. Mile after mile of flat roadway, the distant glow of gas stations, and an occasional convoy of trucks humming through the darkness. 91:27 My life revolved around vending machine coffee, radio static, and the reassuring predictability of routine. 91:34 It was the kind of monotonous work that trained you to notice every small detail, the way fog settled low across the fields, or how the color of the asphalt appeared to change beneath different types of headlights. 91:47 I was not far from the scene on the night the first incident occurred. approximately 10 minutes before the report reached dispatch i had parked beside an emergency pull-off and was recording several barrier replacements on my tablet out of habit i kept my radio tuned to the local highway patrol frequency when dispatch reported that a sedan had crashed near one of the overpasses something in the dispatcher's voice made me sit upright the driver was unresponsive and there was a reference to an impact from above. 92:19 My first assumption was that a truck had lost part of its cargo. 92:23 That explanation stopped making sense when I heard that authorities had closed the entire bridge span. 92:28 I drove to the location before anyone even requested assistance from the road crew. 92:33 Under the cold glare of the fluorescent lights, the scene looked wrong. Traffic cones lay scattered across the pavement. 92:41 Paramedics crouched beside a vehicle that had drifted halfway into the grass. 92:45 Its windshield had shattered inward, and fragments of glass sparkled beneath the lights like frost. 92:51 A patrol officer I knew named Carter motioned for me to move back when I approached too closely. 92:57 When I asked whether the driver was going to survive, he merely shook his head. Then I noticed the indentation in the hood. 93:04 It had not been caused by another vehicle. 93:07 The dent was narrow and deep, as if someone had dropped a cinder block from the bridge above. 93:13 Later that morning, footage from the incident began circulating between departments. 93:18 My curiosity eventually overcame me and I watched the sedan's dashboard camera recording. 93:24 It showed exactly what investigators had described. 93:27 A dark object dropped from the overpass immediately before striking the vehicle. 93:32 No person could be seen standing on the bridge, and the video offered no indication of where the object had originated. 93:39 The following day, another report came in from a different highway. The circumstances were the same. By the third incident, no one could reasonably describe the attacks as coincidences. 93:51 Someone, or perhaps several people, was deliberately targeting random vehicles as part of some twisted internet stunt. 93:58 Once a task force assumed control of the investigation, officials asked me to assist in examining the bridges along my maintenance route. 94:06 I had witnessed plenty of strange things during overnight shifts. Serious collisions, wildlife wandering across the pavement, and occasionally a person walking alone beside the highway. 94:18 This situation felt different. The officers conducting the inspections were tense and unusually quiet. 94:25 Everyone repeatedly looked upward. 94:27 Every bridge we examined seemed to carry the same uncomfortable stillness, almost as if the structure itself remembered what had happened. 94:36 At one overpass, I discovered a small mound of gravel carefully arranged beside the edge. It resembled ammunition someone had gathered in advance. 94:45 It was the kind of detail most people would never notice unless they were deliberately searching for it. 94:50 News of the attack spread quickly through nearby communities. Residents began avoiding the highway after sunset, and local news stations produced every segment they could about the incidents. 95:02 Some people treated the story as neighborhood gossip. 95:05 Others repeated it like an urban legend. 95:09 Then the videos began appearing online. They were short recordings showing masked teenagers throwing debris from bridges and laughing while headlights swerved along the roadway beneath them. 95:19 Most of the clips were fabricated or recycled videos from unrelated pranks. 95:24 A few, however, corresponded with the dates and locations of the actual attacks. 95:29 At that point, the crimes no longer felt isolated. They appeared organized and perhaps even celebrated by the people involved. 95:37 One night I was summoned to another scene near a bridge approximately 15 miles from the site of the first collision. 95:44 The suspect was already in custody when I arrived. 95:47 He could not have been older than 17. 95:50 What I remember most clearly was the expression on the face of the officer standing beside him. 95:56 It was Carter, the same officer who had been at the first crash. 96:00 He stared at the ground as the teenager was placed inside the patrol car. 96:04 Only later did I discover that the boy was Carter's son. 96:08 That explained the silence surrounding the investigation afterward and why everyone carefully avoided mentioning specific names. 96:15 When the reports were completed a week later, the pattern was undeniable. The attacks had been organized through a private group conversation. Someone had created a challenge promising viral recognition to whoever caused the most severe collision. 96:30 The investigators recovered everything. Every video, every timestamp, and every shared laugh. 96:37 Carter took a leave of absence shortly afterward. Authorities installed additional cameras along that section of highway and placed metal safety nets beneath the bridges. 96:46 Even now, whenever I travel those roads at night, I automatically examine every overpass. 96:52 Sometimes I could swear that I see movement above, a brief flicker resembling someone leaning over a railing and waiting. 96:59 Several months passed and ordinary traffic gradually returned to the highway. 97:04 The memorial cross dedicated to the first victim remained on the shoulder, surrounded by faded flowers and empty bottles left by strangers. 97:13 Whenever my road took me past it, I slowed down slightly. 97:18 It became a silent reminder of how quickly a senseless act could permanently alter everything. 97:23 The investigation concluded without receiving much additional attention from the media. 97:28 Most members of the public simply continued with their lives. For those of us who worked along that highway at night, however, the silence never completely disappeared. 97:38 One evening during a storm, I was assigned to inspect one of the bridges we had reinforced. The rain fell so violently that it transformed the guardrails into indistinct gray streaks. 97:49 When I climbed out of my truck, I noticed something resting near the edge of the bridge. 97:53 It was a piece of concrete approximately the size of a football positioned precisely in the middle of the walkway. 98:00 It appeared fresh as though someone had placed it there only minutes earlier. There were no footprints and no tire tracks along the shoulder. 98:08 I could hear only the pounding rain and the echo of water dripping through cracks in the structure. 98:14 I reported the object over the radio and authorities sent a patrol unit to search the area. 98:19 Naturally, the search revealed nothing. Recordings from the security cameras showed that no one had approached the bridge during the hours before my arrival. 98:28 Nevertheless, the spotlights beneath that overpass remained illuminated every night for several weeks, cutting through the darkness like a pair of warning eyes. 98:38 Drivers probably assumed the lights were merely another security precaution. 98:42 I understood the real reason. They remained on because some part of us could not trust that the attacks had truly ended. 98:49 I left the maintenance job one year later and accepted a position closer to my home. 98:54 Sometimes, however, I still drive along those same roads out of habit, watching the bridge lights disappear behind me in the distance. 99:02 Every so often I think about Carter's son and the distorted chain of online challenges that began everything. 99:09 The internet forgot. 99:11 As it always does, I never did. 99:14 Whenever a strong gust strikes my windshield, I glance toward the overpasses without consciously deciding to do it. 99:21 You would imagine that after so much time, I would stop expecting to see someone standing above me. But I never have. 99:29 Not clearly, anyway. 99:36 Story 8 When I first joined the highway patrol, I loved working the early morning shift. 99:43 I enjoyed those silent stretches of road when fog hovered close to the ground and the only sound came from my own tires passing over the wet pavement. 99:52 I was halfway through my shift that night when dispatch received a call that immediately seemed wrong. 99:57 A woman spoke in a trembling, muffled voice. She claimed to be stranded on the shoulder and said someone had attempted to abduct her. 100:05 The connection repeatedly failed, allowing us to hear only fragments of sentences and the quiet sound of her breathing. 100:12 as though she were trying to prevent someone nearby from hearing her. 100:16 Dispatch classified the call as a high-priority emergency because cellular reception in the area was poor and no backup units were close. 100:24 I was the nearest officer, approximately 15 minutes away. 100:29 The silence following the woman's final transmission made the hair rise along my arms. 100:34 As I drove through the fog, the entire world seemed to contract around me, swallowed by that pale gray haze. 100:41 Visibility was no more than 30 feet. 100:44 The cruiser's headlights barely penetrated the mist and instead transformed it into a glowing wall in front of me. 100:51 I reduced my speed as I approached the marker where the emergency call had been traced. 100:56 After lowering my window I listened. At first I heard only the idling engine and the distant whisper of traffic. 101:03 Then I detected faint movement. 101:05 A figure walked along the shoulder. 101:07 It was a woman. 101:09 She was soaked and trembling with both hands pressed close to her chest as if she were trying to keep herself warm. 101:16 I pulled over, activated my emergency lights and climbed out while calling to her. 101:21 She raised her head. 101:22 Her face was pale and strands of wet hair clung to her forehead. Her voice emerged in short bursts between shallow breaths. 101:30 She said she had been kidnapped. 101:33 According to her, she escaped when her abductor turned onto a side road and his vehicle was still parked there. 101:39 She repeatedly pointed toward the tree line where the fog gathered as densely as smoke. 101:44 I assessed her condition. 101:46 She was drenched, shivering, and barefoot. A torn dress clung tightly to her body. 101:52 She had no identification and carried no purse or bag. 101:55 My training took control, maintained distance, remained vigilant, and obtained specific information. 102:02 I attempted to contact dispatch, but the radio produced only static. A broken fragment of a response came through before dissolving into noise. 102:11 The woman urged me to follow her. 102:13 She insisted that the man was probably still nearby and might be injured. 102:18 The desperation in her eyes made me hesitate, but something about her expression kept changing. 102:24 One moment she looked terrified. 102:26 The next she appeared strangely calm. 102:29 I tried the radio again and changed frequencies. 102:32 This time I intercepted fragments of another voice repeating words almost identical to those the woman had spoken moments earlier. 102:39 Please help me. He's still there. 102:43 The tone was the same. 102:44 Even the pauses occurred in the same places, almost like a recording playing slightly out of synchronization. 102:51 My stomach tightened. 102:53 I drew a breath and looked back toward the highway. It remained empty. 102:58 Eventually, I decided to follow the woman several steps beyond the shoulder, keeping one hand on my flashlight. 103:05 The turn-off she indicated was nearly impossible to see through the fog. It consisted of a narrow gravel trail curving between dense, overgrown vegetation. 103:14 After crossing the guardrail, my boots sank into the soft mud. 103:18 The air smelled metallic, like rainwater mixed with old motor oil. The woman repeatedly looked over her shoulder and whispered that the car was directly ahead. But whenever I examined the place she indicated, I saw nothing except mist. 103:33 Then a flash appeared at the edge of my vision. 103:36 It was a brief red glow, possibly a taillight, but it disappeared almost immediately. 103:42 I redirected my flashlight and illuminated a scarf tangled around a low branch. 103:47 It appeared new but damp, as if someone had intentionally placed it there. 103:52 I called to the woman and asked her name, hoping to make the situation feel more concrete. 103:57 She did not respond. 103:59 When I turned around, she was farther away than she had been before. She stood near the bend where the gravel trail vanished into darkness. 104:07 The fog concealed the lower half of her body, and her silhouette looked blurred like a stain across a pane of glass. 104:14 I took a step toward her. Before I could speak, my radio burst to life. There was a sharp wave of feedback followed by a familiar voice. It was mine. 104:24 My own voice repeated the exact words I had spoken minutes earlier when I first reached the scene. The tone was identical, and even the background sounds were the same. 104:34 It made no sense. 104:36 I stood completely still and listened until static distorted the transmission, and everything became silent again. 104:42 I switched frequencies once more in an effort to contact dispatch. This time I heard faint crying in the distance. The sound repeated mechanically, like a short piece of audio being played continuously. 104:55 Then I realized it was no longer coming through my radio. The crying originated somewhere nearby, drifting through the fog as a muffled echo. 105:04 My flashlight reflected off a small object lying on the ground. It was a child sneaker. 105:10 The shoe was perfectly clean, as if it had never touched the surrounding mud. 105:15 Its position looked much too intentional. The entire area felt staged, as though someone were placing objects along the trail to guide me farther away from the highway. 105:25 I swept my light across the fog, searching for motion. That was when I realized how completely silent the area had become. There was no wind, no noise from insects, and no sound from the interstate. 105:37 There was only me. 105:39 My instincts ordered me to retreat, move to a safer location, and request backup. But protocol and curiosity fought against that instinct. 105:49 What if someone genuinely was injured somewhere beyond the fog? 105:53 My phone suddenly vibrated with a map notification showing the shared location associated with the emergency call. 106:00 I looked at the screen. 106:02 The location marker was moving. 106:04 It jumped unpredictably between two separate points. 106:08 One appeared near my patrol car while the other was farther along the gravel turnoff. 106:13 The marker continued shifting from one position to the other. almost as though someone wanted me to pursue it. 106:20 I turned toward the second location. 106:23 That was when I saw the silhouette. 106:25 Someone was crouching behind a cluster of bushes. The figure did not flee or make any sudden movement. It remained still, apparently waiting and observing me through the mist. 106:36 I kept my flashlight directed at it and carefully examined the shape. 106:40 The crouched person did not react, even when I called out. 106:44 My thumb hovered beside the safety mechanism on my holster while every nerve in my body remained alert. 106:50 I moved forward by one cautious step. A faint metallic tapping noise sounded behind me. 106:57 I turned my flashlight toward it and caught the edge of something reflective near the distant glow of my cruiser's lights. 107:03 When I looked back toward the bushes, the silhouette had vanished. I could not see where it had gone, but the fog moved slightly as though something passing through it had disturbed the air. 107:14 My pulse pounded inside my ears. 107:16 Then I realized I had also lost sight of the woman. 107:20 My training told me to return to my patrol vehicle, but curiosity and procedure continued pulling me in the opposite direction. 107:27 What if someone truly needed assistance? 107:30 I advanced several more steps along the turn-off. A dim light eventually appeared through the mist. 107:36 Headlights pointed downward from a vehicle that was partially concealed within the vegetation. 107:42 The car existed after all. Its driver's door stood open and the interior lights flickered weakly. 107:49 I identified myself as a police officer, checked the immediate surroundings, and then leaned into the vehicle. 107:56 No one occupied the seats. 107:58 Several small objects covered the floor. Coins, a hair tie, and an empty water bottle. They were all unusually clean and arranged too carefully to have fallen there by accident. 108:09 The weak odor of gasoline lingered inside the vehicle. 108:13 My radio produced another voice. 108:15 I recognized my dispatcher, but something about the transmission was wrong. 108:21 Her speech followed an unnatural rhythm. 108:23 Every word sounded clipped and mechanical. 108:27 Unit 31, confirm your status. 108:30 I answered, but the connection crackled and her voice continued repeating the same sentence while I was still speaking. 108:37 Beneath it, I heard another quiet noise. There were whispers buried too deeply within the static to understand. 108:43 They faded in and out, making the transmission sound like several separate recordings stitched together. 108:49 Every instinct I possessed screamed that someone was luring me into a trap and deliberately pulling me deeper into the area. 108:56 I backed away from the abandoned car and again searched the tree line. As I reached toward the flashlight attached to my belt, my boot struck something. 109:05 A folded paper map lay partially covered by mud. 109:09 It was not worn or weather-damaged as it should have been. 109:12 When I unfolded it, I discovered a red circle drawn around the exact location where I was standing. 109:19 Despite the rain, the ink had not smeared. Someone had marked my position in advance. 109:24 Every strange detail began connecting in my mind. The scarf, the child's shoe, and the objects carefully distributed throughout the vehicle. 109:33 Nothing had occurred by chance. Someone had organized the situation down to the minute. 109:39 The fog now felt heavier, pressing against me from every direction. 109:44 Somewhere beyond the limit of my vision, an engine started, its low rumble cut directly through the mist. 109:50 It idled briefly and then stopped. 109:52 I aimed my flashlight toward the source but saw only a solid wall of fog. 109:57 Behind me, the emergency lights on my patrol car were barely visible through the haze. I decided to return to the highway. 110:05 I kept the flashlight lowered and one hand close to my sidearm. 110:09 Every step across the gravel sounded impossibly loud, as though I were broadcasting my location to everyone nearby. 110:16 Halfway back, another movement flashed in front of me. 110:20 Someone ran between the trees on my left, moving too quickly for me to follow with the light. 110:25 I shouted a warning and identified myself as a law enforcement officer. 110:30 The forest responded with silence. 110:33 When I finally reached the shoulder, I noticed another pair of headlights glowing through the fog. 110:38 backup. 110:40 Relief struck me so powerfully that I nearly laughed. Then I noticed that the headlights were positioned incorrectly. 110:47 The vehicle was not approaching from the interstate. It was already parked near my cruiser facing it. It was an unmarked black SUV with its engine running. 110:57 The driver's door stood ajar but the interior remained dark. I called out again using a firm voice. No one answered. 111:05 The wind changed direction, carrying a familiar odor toward me. It was the same smell of gasoline, only much stronger now. 111:13 Then my dispatcher's voice returned through the radio with perfect clarity. 111:17 She said my unit number. 111:19 This time, however, she also addressed me by my first name. 111:23 The dispatcher did not know my first name. I immediately switched off the radio, moved behind my cruiser for protection, and drew my weapon. 111:32 The headlights of the SUV dimmed slightly, almost as if someone had passed directly in front of them. 111:38 For several seconds the only noise was the ticking sound of my cruiser's engine cooling. 111:43 Then I heard shoes scraping against the asphalt. From what I could determine, there were perhaps two people walking slowly along the shoulder toward me. 111:52 I shouted commands. No one responded. 111:56 My flashlight revealed only brief fragments. The reflection of wet clothing, a partially raised hand, and a shadow shifting just beyond clear focus. 112:06 Then the footsteps stopped. The SUV's engine shut down. 112:10 Silence returned so oppressive that I could hear my own heartbeat. 112:14 Investigators later told me that I had been fortunate. Another patrol unit located me approximately 20 minutes after my last transmission. 112:23 I was standing beside my cruiser with my firearm drawn, still searching the fog. 112:28 The black SUV had vanished. 112:30 So had the woman. 112:32 The only remaining evidence consisted of several sets of footprints surrounding my patrol vehicle before disappearing into the undergrowth. 112:40 Authorities later recovered the supposed victim's phone two counties away. 112:45 Every piece of information had been erased from it except for one saved audio recording. 112:50 It contained my own distorted voice repeating the same few words I had spoken when I first arrived. 112:56 Whoever those people were, they knew precisely how to lure an isolated police officer into the darkness.
